When I see a patient for the first time, I want to get to know the patient — as an individual, not just their medical issues, but I want to get to know their family history, their social history, their hobbies, something unique about the patient, why they came in to see me, what their goals are — not just what my goals are, but what they have in mind when they come in to see me. There’s a lot of information out on the Internet. A lot of people Google it, they bring in articles, they discuss that with me. They also hear stuff anecdotally, like “My family member was on that particular medication, and they didn’t do well, so I really don’t want to take that medication.” So I like to think of myself as a resource and a guide to help navigate through all of that, because there’s really a lot out there, and not all of it is really appropriate for that particular individual. So I sort of encourage people to look and see what’s out there on the Internet, and then to bring it into me and then we can discuss that together. I’ve been in practice for many, many years, so I’m beginning to see not only the patient, but sometimes the next generation in that particular family. And so to me it’s gratifying to establish a relationship and see them on an ongoing basis year after year after year.
