I think one thing that I do really like about internal medicine and being a primary care doctor is being able to develop long-term relationships with people — seeing a patient and then seeing them back again and again and again and becoming a part of their life, and learning about their families and their wants and needs and problems, and developing a long-term relationship — that’s really what appeals to me about internal medicine and primary care. There’s always more than one option. There’s always more than one way to tackle a problem, and I think that you’re most effective when you sit down and you talk to someone and you try to figure out what’s going to work the best for them, for their lifestyle. Because if we come up with something that’s not doable or not attainable, then nothing’s going to happen and nothing’s going to change, and that’s not going to be helpful. So the key I think really is presenting different options, discussing what the pros and cons of each option might be, and then choosing together the best route to accomplish the goal, or solve the problem, or just make someone feel better. |
