When I first meet a patient, the first thing I ask them is, “Do you have any questions?” And no question is silly, stupid or insignificant. And then the last thing I ask them before they have left the room is, “Do you have any other questions?” I want to make sure people feel as though they have gathered the information, so we can conquer fear with information and knowledge. A lot of times people come and say they have fatigue, or they have pain, say they can’t sleep, and it affects their daily life. It affects how they interact with their family. It affects how they work, and it affects how they’re able to enjoy their life in general. So if we can get them to feel better and to feel more vigorous, then I feel like I’ve done my job. Certainly if we can get the numbers in the right range — whether it’s blood pressure or sugar or weight, that’s great. But if people are feeling better, that’s really the ultimate goal for me.
