Family medicine tends to focus more on people and individuals and managing relationships, as well as their medical problems. I think in primary care, for example, we may have more success getting people to change their diet, to lose weight, to quit smoking, and so forth, because we have ongoing interactions with them. We understand the stressors that drive that, and we can engage with them over long periods of time to work towards those ends. It’s a validating experience to have a family member say, “Can I bring my mom to you?” or “Can I bring my daughter to you?” It’s very helpful for me to know that the patient trusts me and has that sense of, “I would like you to also care for my other family members.” I think that’s something that’s rewarding — it’s something that encourages me. And clearly I’m having an impact on the patient, if they feel strongly about bringing their family to me, as well.
